"The Warburton 7D top/T4 backbore allows me the degree of flexibility required to play a different sound in different situations. The wide rim feels comfortable to me. It is rare to find a mouthpiece that gives you an even sound in all registers of your instrument. As the lead trombone in both the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band and Roy Hargrove’s Big Band, I can create the bright, sizzling sound that sits on top of other horns. When playing third in the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, I can bring the fat, meaty sound that supports and bridges the gap between the lead and bass trombone. When soloing on a ballad, working with my own quintet or backing up a vocalist, I am able to achieve the warmth necessary for the more personal sound."

It was my good fortune to receive the benefit of working with outstanding private teachers as I acquired my formal music education. As a student at Idyllwild Arts Academy High School in Idyllwild, California, I studied with Marshall Hawkins, Ken Hanlon, Loren Marsteller. As an undergraduate at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, I studied with the late Raymond Premru, the late JJ Johnson, Pat Halloran, and Kenny Davis. I completed a Masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York where I studied with Steve Turre, Slide Hampton, Jack Gayle, and Per Brevig.

For the past ten years, I have performed with the Grammy Award winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and continue to do so. I have been the lead trombonist with the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band, directed by Slide Hampton, since 2004. I am also the lead trombonist in Roy Hargrove’s Big Band.

As a freelance musician based in New York, I perform with my quintet and have had the opportunity to perform with many notable musical artists such as McCoy Tyner, Charles Tolliver, Jimmy Heath, Ray Charles, Illinois Jacquet, Randy Newman, Charles Mingus’ Big Band, Maria Schneider, Lennie Kravitz, Barry Manilow, and James Brown and Burning Spear, to name a few.

On Broadway, I have been a regular orchestral member of two Tony Award winning shows, "The Color Purple," and "Wonderful Town." I have also worked in the orchestras of many other Broadway hits, including but not limited to, "The Producers," "Spamalot," "South Pacific," "Chorus Line," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," Wild Party," "Miss Saigon," "Chicago," "Curtains," and "CATS."

I have received two Grammy awards for my work on MONDAY NIGHT LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD (2009, best large jazz ensemble), JAH IS REAL, Burning Spears, (2009, best reggae album), and played on Slide Hampton’s 2007 Grammy Winner for best jazz composition, THE WAY, MUSIC OF SLIDE HAMPTON. I also perform on several other Grammy nominated jazz and Broadway cast albums. My own first CD is entitled GOING HOME. A more compete discography, as well as lists of my arrangements and publications can be found on my website.
